Description
23 High Street is a building that was originally an attached house and is now a shop. It has a core dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with later alterations made in the late 18th century and late 20th century.
The main front of the building is finished with colourwashed render and features an ashlar coping on the south gable. It has a pantile mansard roof and rubble walling on the rear extension. The building is two storeys tall with an attic and has a double-depth plan. The exterior includes a two-window range, rendered pilasters, and a blind parapet. On the ground floor, there are two recessed, late 20th century, multi-paned glazed doors on the left with a flat hood above, and a canted late 20th century shopfront on the right. The first floor features twelve-pane sash windows with horns, and there are two plain, rectangular dormers in the attic from the late 20th century.
Inside, the ground floor has a framed ceiling made of ovolo-moulded oak beams that create six separate compartments. The property is particularly notable for the rare survival of a fine ceiling from the late 16th century to early 17th century.
