Description

The Conservative Club, formerly known as Newton House, is located on High Street in Keynsham. This building dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and features a colourwashed render with stone dressings. The roof is not visible.

Architecturally, it is designed in the Late Georgian style and has a double-depth plan. The exterior is two stories high with a one-to-three window range. The street front includes a plinth, end pilasters, a first-floor sill band, a cornice, and a blind parapet. The ground floor has three windows, all of which are original 16-pane sashes. On the first floor, there is one 16-pane sash window to the left and three smaller 12-pane sashes to the right. An early 19th-century doorway is located between the first and second bays on the left, featuring fluted Doric half-columns that support a plain cornice. The doorway has a four-panel door and a round-arched opening with an attractive fanlight that includes a central roundel and mouchette tracery. A flagpole extends from the doorcase cornice through the upper cornice and parapet.

Inside, there is no remaining evidence of the original room layout or any notable architectural details. Historically, the building was originally named Newton House and opened in 1905 as the Keynsham and District Constitutional Club. The Conservative Club is part of a group with the adjoining Archway and The Old Bank Public House.
