Description

The Baptist Church, known as Ebenezer Chapel, was built in 1834, as indicated on its parapet, and underwent restoration and reordering in 1975-1976. The church features colourwashed render and a gabled slate roof, designed in the Italianate style. It has a simple rectangular preaching space and is two stories tall with a three-window range. The symmetrical west front consists of three sections, with the center recessed. It includes a plinth, Doric end pilasters, a projecting cornice, and a blind parapet. The windows are round-headed 15/15 sashes set in plain reveals with sills. The central doorcase is adorned with fluted Doric pilasters, a projecting cornice, and six-panel two-leaf doors. There are 20th-century extensions to the east and south-west corners. Inside, galleries surround all sides except the east, supported by slender cast-iron columns, with cast-iron floral panels on the frontages. The original pews remain in the galleries. This building replaced a church that was established in 1807. It is set back from the road, with a paved courtyard in front.
