Description
Abbey View is a terrace of nine houses built around 1864. The houses are constructed of ashlar, with the facade of number 7 painted. The roofs are slate and concrete tile. The terrace is steeply stepped, with wide-span roofs and rear wings.
The houses are two storeys high, with two or one window to the front. Most have plain sash windows, although numbers 1 and 2 feature cornices on consoles above the ground-floor windows, and the others have flat-roofed canted bays with cornices and blocking. Numbers 8 and 9 have paired French casements in their canted bays. The front doors are four-panelled, with glazing and transom lights; numbers 1, 3, 4 and 8 have margin panes to the transom lights. A continuous stepped and swept sill band runs along the front, with brackets supporting the windows. There is a moulded cornice with blocking course and parapet. Party walls are coped, with ashlar stacks generally serving pairs of houses, and a stack on each side of the ridge at number 9. Slate roofs remain on numbers 2, 3 and 8.
The rear of the houses has mostly plain sash windows on the upper floor. Varied rear wings exist, with numbers 1 and 2 featuring paired wings and lean-to slopes, while number 9 has a hipped wing with plastic windows and a large chimney stack.
The interior of number 8, recorded by the Bath Preservation Trust in 1993, features a wooden staircase with a mahogany handrail, plain marble fireplace surrounds, and decorative plasterwork, reflecting a considerable Edwardian remodelling. The interiors of the other houses have not been inspected.
Abbey View is a late classical terrace facing east, designed to take advantage of views across the valley. It first appears in the Bath Directory for 1866-1867 and is located near Abbey View House and number 10.
