Description
The building is a workshop, formerly a mill or warehouse, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of painted limestone rubble with Bath Stone dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The rectangular plan features a large open space on the ground floor with offices above.
The front elevation has three storeys and four bays. The ground floor includes a large modern opening beneath a string course that incorporates the entablature of a former door case, with a surviving fascia and cornice. The first floor has four modern six-over-six windows set in plain architraves, while the second floor features four modern three-over-three windows also in plain architraves, topped by a modillion cornice. The south gable elevation is simple, except for coping and an elaborate Venetian window with a stepped keystone, bold mullions, and a pronounced cornice and entablature, which contains a fixed light multi-paned window. The north gable is coped and has a rendered axial stack.
The building has historical significance as a former mill or warehouse linked to John Wood’s 'Lower Town,' built for Ralph Allen. The interior has not been inspected.
