Description
This is a row of six houses located on the southwest side of The Grove, originally part of Weston Park. They were built in the mid-18th century, with Nos. 3 and 4 significantly altered in the late 19th century. The houses are constructed with painted stucco over limestone rubble and have steeply pitched double Roman tile and slate mansard roofs. The roofs feature moulded stacks to the party walls and gable ends.
Each house has a double-depth plan and a two-storey, attic form, with mostly two-window fronts and a door to the left. No. 1, believed to be the oldest, has a higher ridge line and six/six-pane sash windows. It features a large, late 19th-century dormer, small panes to the small first-floor windows, and a six-panel door beneath an early 19th-century gabled, trellised porch. No. 2 also has a high ridge, six/six-pane sash windows, paired dormer windows, two windows in raised surrounds to the first floor, an eight/eight-pane sash to the ground floor, and a six-panel door with a swept canopy to the porch.
No. 3 has a double stack to the left, a coped parapet, a cornice, and a ground-floor platband. It has a three/six-pane sash window in the attic and a casement window. Other windows include a six/six-pane sash to the left of the first floor and paired windows to the right, with one window blind and the other a four/four-pane sash. The interior features a six-panel door glazed to the top in a raised surround with a cornice on consoles, flanked on the left by a six/six-pane sash and on the right by a blind window. No. 4 mirrors No. 3 with a continuous cornice and platband, a three/six-pane sash window to the attic, two six/six-pane sashes to the first floor, and one to the right of the six-panel door, which is protected by a 20th-century stone hood on shaped brackets. No. 5 is similar to No. 4, but lacks a parapet or cornice and has a slate roof. No. 6, at the left end, has a combination of double Roman tiles to the top of the roof and slate to the lower slope of the roof, along with plate glass sash windows and a six-panel door to the right, also featuring a stone hood on shaped brackets. The interiors have not been inspected.
