Description
This is a barn attached to the west of Malt House Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century with later alterations. It is constructed from limestone and sandstone rubble, featuring a pantiled roof on the south side, a double Roman tiled slope on the north, and a plain tiled hipped roof to the west, with some brickwork present.
The south front has a cart entry with a timber lintel and a small blocked window above it, also with a timber lintel. To the right, there is some brickwork and a former door that has been replaced with a 3-light window. A large lean-to on the left continues the pitch of the main roof and conceals a blocked 2-light window with an ovolo mullion and an upper ventilation slit. The roof consists of four bays supported by two rows of purlins and principal rafters.
On the west elevation, there is a small opening at ground floor level on the left and a central blocked loading door above, with a straight joint to the lean-to on the right. The rear, facing the road, features a high blocked cart entry to the left, with small openings added at ground and first floor levels. There are three blocked openings with timber lintels at the center of the first floor, along with two blocked ventilation slits below. To the right, there are two blocked ventilation slits under the eaves and a continuous stone hood mould below, which also has two blocked windows and one door.
Inside, the barn has a 9-bay roof with a tie-beam, two collars (some cambered), three rows of purlins, a ridge purlin, and a plated yoke on the front and rear slopes. There are two tiers of windbraces, which are straight and not curved, though not present in all bays. Heavy chamfered beams support the floor across part of the interior.
