Description

Chelwood House is a house dating to the late 17th century, with later alterations from the late 18th century and the 20th century. The house is constructed of rubble, rendered and with stone dressings, and has slate roofs with brick stacks, alongside a pantiled and double Roman tiled rear wing. The rear wing forms an L-shaped plan. The house is over two and a half storeys and has a 2:3:2 window arrangement, with the central three bays projecting forward and three gables featuring raised coped verges and saddlestones to the central gable. Ground and first-floor windows are sash windows within flat architraves, which include a roll-moulding; the second-floor windows are similarly treated with 6-pane sashes. A central gabled porch has 6-panelled double doors, with a 4-pane window on either side, all within matching surrounds. Cellar windows with two lights are visible to the right and left. Plain band courses run at ground and first floor levels.

The right return features a ground and first-floor 18-pane sash with thick glazing bars in a plain surround; the band courses extend only as far as the windows. The left return shows band courses, a blocked window at ground and first floor level (visible through the render), a door in a matching surround to the left, and 6-pane sashes at first and second floor level, also within similar surrounds. A lower, two-storey wing to the left has a 20th-century window with a segmental head and a single light at ground floor, alongside a similar sash under the eaves to the right.

The rear originally mirrored the front’s three gables but has been altered with the addition of a rear wing. On the left, a gable houses a sash window with a floating cornice on the ground and first floors, and a 6-pane sash on the second floor. The central, gabled projecting bays have one sash on the ground floor, two on the first floor, and a 6-pane sash on the second floor. The lower two-storey wing to the right contains a single-storey 20th-century porch in the angle, with a sash window also set in the angle to the left, and a sash to the right.

Inside, the front right room is panelled, with shutters to the windows, a dado rail, and a cornice. The rest of the interior has not been inspected.
