Description
Bathampton Toll Bridge is a toll bridge built in 1872 by Hickes and Isaac. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features eight pointed arches. There are two smaller arches to the left and three to the right over the riverbanks, with three larger arches to the left of the central span over the River Avon. Both groups of smaller arches are flanked by narrow, deep offset buttresses with pitched tops. The central arch is flanked by buttresses that are gabled on each facet. The outer sides of the coped parapets have recessed circular panels surrounding pierced trefoils, while the inner facades do not have panels. This toll bridge is designed in a romantic style but has a commercial purpose, drawing clear inspiration from medieval architecture as it spans the northern reaches of the Avon.
