Description

Field End is a detached house located on the northwest side of High Street in Batheaston. It was built in the late 18th century, possibly by the architect Thomas Baldwin, and underwent alterations and extensions in the mid-19th century and in 1867. The building features ashlar stonework, with coursed rubble on the left wing and slate roofs, including a mansard roof at the center.

The central section, designed in a style reminiscent of Baldwin, has a roof behind a parapet and a projecting moulded cornice, with diagonal ashlar stacks added in 1867. The house is two stories tall and has five large pane sash windows. The central five windows are set in a two-story coursed rubble bow with a pierced parapet from 1867. The outer ground floor windows are tripartite, each with a shallow semi-circular niche above that contains carved swags. The façade is adorned with four giant pilasters in the Spalato order.

The right wing, constructed in the mid-19th century, also has two stories and attics with half dormers, featuring two 4-pane sash windows. The left wing, dated 1867 in the gable, is two stories high and includes square and segmental headed casement windows with stone mullions. A round tower with a spire and a weather vane is located at the corner of this wing.

The entrance is on the south-west elevation and consists of a large panelled door framed by a Doric doorcase, which is topped by a hood that supports strapwork and armorial bearings.
