Description

This listing describes the terrace, steps, walls, piers, and railings associated with Nos 1-6 Widcombe Terrace, built around 1805. The structure features a paved raised terrace made of limestone ashlar and cast iron, which includes a prominent paved area at the front and a bold quadrant staircase leading up to the rear of the terrace on Church Street.

The broad stone-flagged area is accessed by a wide flight of five steps that have nosings and are flanked by tall square piers topped with urns that have pine cone caps. Between these piers, there is a simple overthrow. To the right of the paving, a continuous spiked railing runs along the full width of the terrace on an ashlar curb, featuring three gates that lead down to garden areas separated by ashlar walls with copings.

At the far end of the terrace, there is an ashlar wall approximately 2 meters high, which has a pair of rusticated piers carrying pine-cone urn finials and a plank door. At the north-west end of the terrace, opposite the double bows, there is a low wall topped with spiked railing, which connects to a square pier with a pyramidal cap on the left. This leads to a quadrant of eighteen sandstone steps, with the ends still in the original limestone. To the right, there is a coursed rubble wall with ramped flat coping, and to the left, an ashlar wall with rounded flush coping, which is stopped at the lower end by a square pier and at the top by a boundary wall. These features are significant components of the overall design of Widcombe Terrace.
