Description

22 and 23 High Street are a pair of houses located in Twerton, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with modifications made in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed from rough squared rubble and feature a concrete tile roof.

The houses are three storeys tall, each with one window. No. 22 has twelve-pane sash windows at the first and second floors, set in plain flush surrounds with stooled sills. It also features a paired twelve-pane window in a broad chamfered stone surround with a mullion, and a moulded four-panel door to the right. No. 23 has plain sash windows in similar settings and a flush four-panel door also to the right. The steeply pitched roof has a coped right gable with prominent kneelers and an ashlar stack, along with a central ridge stack in ashlar in two stages and a cropped stack to the left.

At the rear, each house has a small rectangular casement window in a recessed ovolo mould surround at eaves level, along with similar two-light windows at the first and ground floors. The interior has not been inspected.

Historically, this property is part of a row of six houses but retains more early detail than the others. A straight joint in the wall adjoining No. 21 suggests that these houses were built at different times.
