Description
12 and 14 Wells Road are a pair of detached houses dating from around 1820, located at the end of a row. They are constructed from limestone ashlar, with the front of No. 12 rendered, and feature a slate roof. The houses have a double depth plan and stand two storeys tall with two lower ground floors due to the drop in level from the road. Each house has two windows, all of which are plain sash windows set above heavy stooled sills. The windows are positioned above late 19th-century shopfronts, with No. 14 featuring pilasters and a two-bay design that includes a central door with a transom light and an additional door to the right. A small plinth dies to the left with a rise in the pavement, and there is a cavetto cornice with a blocking course and parapet. The right side of the building returns at an obtuse angle, featuring a coped gable and a small cropped stack at the front. The rear of the houses, which abuts the railway line, is not accessible. The pair is a remnant of a longer row that has since been partially demolished and is included for its group value. The road to Wells and Exeter was referred to as 'The New Road' on Chantry's 1793 plan of Bath.
