Description
30 and 32 Wells Road are three houses in a stepped row, built around 1820 with 20th-century additions. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and have roofs covered with double Roman tiles, slate, or concrete tiles. The buildings rise three storeys, with lower ground floors due to a drop in the site from the street front. Each house features two windows, all of which are sash windows.
No. 30 has a small access dormer to the left, above a plain sash window, and a reeded pilaster shop front that includes a door with margin pane glazing. To the left, there is a six-panel door set in a projecting stone pilaster doorcase with incised panels and square corner blocks, topped by a slightly peaked hood and a small plain light. No. 32 has a plain sixteen-pane window above a plain twelve-pane window, along with a small shopfront that retains its original fascia and cornice, and a part-glazed door to the left, which features a cast iron foot scraper.
The houses have small plinths that die to the left, cornices, blocking courses, parapets, coped party divisions, and deep ashlar stacks to the right. The rear of the buildings is not accessible. The interiors have not been inspected.
These houses are part of a mixed development from the late 18th century and early 19th century and were originally part of a longer row of Georgian houses. A bomb destroyed Nos. 36-40 Wells Road in 1942 and severely damaged the previously listed No. 34, which was extensively rebuilt afterward. The remaining houses are notable examples of the southern expansion of the city during the later Georgian period.
