Description
16, 18, and 20 Wells Road are three houses built around 1820, arranged in a stepped row. They are constructed from limestone ashlar with slate roofs and feature a double depth plan under a wide gabled roof. The buildings are two storeys tall, with two lower ground floors due to the drop in the site from the street front. Each house has two windows, all of which are sash windows.
No. 16 has plain and blind lights on each level, with the first-floor window featuring a painted sixteen-pane design. It has a flush six-panel door, and to the right, there is a coped gable above a large ashlar block, with a square string course above the upper floor and a single plain sash window at four levels, along with an offset rubble plinth at the lowest floor.
No. 18 has good twelve-pane replacement windows and a near-central five-panel fielded door, with the top panel glazed. No. 20 is similar but features balconettes on the upper windows. Each house has a small plinth that meets the pavement on the left, a heavy stone cyma eaves cornice, and coped party divisions with kneelers. Nos. 16 and 18 share ashlar stacks. The rear of the houses is adjacent to a railway line and is not accessible.
The interiors have not been inspected. This group of houses is included for their group value. The road to Wells and Exeter was referred to as 'The New Road' on Chantry's 1793 plan of Bath.
