67/0/10011 THE TYNING 11-NOV-09 (Northwest side) War Memorial

War memorial. 1922. Bath stone obelisk on square plinth, with chamfered corners, and three-stepped base. The obelisk is surmounted by a bronze Eternal Flame. The plinth bears a dedication on its south face to those lost in World War I on a slate plaque. The inscription reads TO THE MEN OF FRESHFORD/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 -1919' below this is a list of 17 names followed by ' "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERYMORE" '. A smaller slate plaque on the top step bears the names those lost in WWII. The inscription reads1939 - 1945' followed by a list of four names.
HISTORY: The memorial was dedicated on 18 April 1922 and unveiled by the Marquis of Bath. The engraving of the plaque was carried out by George Moore, a local public house landlord and former stonemason.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION DECISION: Freshford war memorial is designated at Grade II, for the following principal reasons: * An eloquent witness to the impact of tragic world events on this community * GGood use of local materials, with symbolic interest of the Eternal Flame surmounting the obelisk.
