Description
The Freshford War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1922. It features a Bath stone obelisk set on a square plinth with chamfered corners and a three-stepped base. At the top of the obelisk is a bronze Eternal Flame. The south face of the plinth includes a dedication to those lost in World War I, inscribed on a slate plaque. The inscription reads, "TO THE MEN OF FRESHFORD/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 -1919," followed by a list of 17 names and the phrase, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERYMORE." A smaller slate plaque on the top step lists four names of those lost in World War II, with the inscription "1939 - 1945."
The memorial was dedicated on 18 April 1922 and unveiled by the Marquis of Bath. The engraving of the plaque was done by George Moore, a local public house landlord and former stonemason. The memorial is recognized for its significance as a testament to the impact of world events on the community and for its use of local materials, along with the symbolic meaning of the Eternal Flame.
