Description

The Hermitage is a house dating from the late 14th and 15th centuries, with significant restoration and alterations carried out in the late 19th century. Constructed of coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings, it features Cotswold stone slate roofs with coped verges and octagonal ashlar stacks. The building is arranged in a T-shaped plan with a gabled cross wing to the south. It has two storeys and attics, with two bays. Windows are 2- and 3-light casements with moulded mullions, transoms, and drip moulds. A single-light casement with a cusped 4-centred arch lintel is found in the apex of the gable. A modern door sits under a 4-centred arch lintel, and a Cotswold stone slate roofed porch is located in the re-entrant angle between the wings. Internally, a stone newel staircase is partially preserved, with its upper section blocked. The south-east room has a stone recess, potentially an aumbry. The south wing contains three arch-braced collar beam trusses, two of which have cusped wind bracing.
