Description

Nos. 8, 9, and 10 The Royal Oak Public House is a row of three terrace houses, now functioning as a public house, built around 1820. The buildings are constructed of painted limestone ashlar and feature double pitched roofs covered with double Roman tiles, with a moulded stack located between Nos. 8 and 9.

The exterior consists of two storeys and a basement, with each house having a two-window range. The coped parapets rise over the gable ends to the left returns. Nos. 8 and 9 have late 19th-century horned plate glass sash windows on the first floors, with run-out-chamfered jambs, and six/six-pane sash windows on the inner ranges of the ground floors. The outer ranges include steps with railings. No. 8 features a flat hood suspended above the entrance, while No. 9 has a 20th-century porch. No. 10 is slightly elevated, with splayed reveals to its two/two-pane sash windows on the first floor, a six/six-pane sash window on the ground floor to the left, and steps and railings leading to a four-panel door with an overlight.

The interior has not been inspected except for the pub area, which has undergone significant alterations. The lease for No. 10 is dated 25th March 1819, and this row is part of the late Georgian development of the Dolemeads area, which was undertaken by Mr. John Farmer in the space between the River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal.
