Description

A group of five chest tombs, located 10 yards to the east of the chancel of the Parish Church of St Nicholas, dates from the mid to late 18th century and early 19th century. They are made of ashlar and feature panelled sides and moulded cornices. The first tomb, from 1830, is by Mackenzie and has a plinth, a dentilled cornice, incised lettering, and a draped urn. The second tomb, from 1803, is by Calman and Boon and is tall and square with inscribed panels. The third and fourth tombs date from the late 18th to early 19th century and are oval with inscribed marble panels, though the inscriptions are illegible. The fifth tomb, from the early to mid-19th century, has inscribed panels (also illegible) and large corner acroteria. This collection of chest tombs showcases a variety of classical and traditional local styles and enhances the setting of the church.
