Description

This group of five chest tombs is located to the northeast of the chancel of the Parish Church of St. Nicholas. They date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are constructed of ashlar with panelled sides and moulded cornices.

The first tomb, from 1829, is associated with Bowen and features plain panels surrounded by cast iron railings. The second tomb is squared and topped with a carved urn finial. The third tomb, dated 1828, is attributed to Wright of Bath and has a plain design. The fourth tomb, from 1837, is dedicated to Lady Keane and stands on a plinth with a shaped top and corner acroteria. The fifth tomb, dating from 1815, is linked to Hume.

These chest tombs represent a notable collection of classical and traditional local tomb forms and enhance the setting of the church.
