Description

The Parish Church of St Nicholas has origins dating back to the 13th century, with alterations and a tower added in the 15th century. The church underwent significant restoration, including the construction of a North aisle in 1858 by A.S. Goodridge of Bath and a chancel restoration in 1882 by C.E. Davis of Bath. These 19th-century restorations have largely obscured Ralph Allen's Gothick restoration from the mid-18th century. The building features ashlar and coursed, squared rubble with a slate roof, which is accented by pierced quatrefoil parapets. The church consists of a west tower, nave, north and south aisles, a south porch, and a chancel.

The tower has three stages, diagonal buttresses, an embattled parapet with pinnacles, an octagonal stair turret, and a single perpendicular bell chamber window. The windows in the aisles and chancel have been restored. There is a mutilated effigy, possibly of a bishop or prioress, located in a niche under the east window, likely from the 16th century.

Inside, the church features an early English chancel arch (restored) and a triple lancet east window. The Australia Chapel in the south aisle contains memorials to the Allen family, including Philip Allen from 1763, Ralph Allen from 1977, and Charles Holder from 1763. In the chancel, there are various 18th and 19th-century wall plaques and tablets, particularly one for Robert Fisher from 1795. Additionally, there is a mutilated 14th-century effigy on the window sill of the west window of the south aisle and a Victorian font.
