Description

The Hancock memorial in Smallcombe Cemetery is a memorial dating from around 1863, made of pennant stone and designed in a Neo-Classical style. It is an adaptation of a Roman altar form, featuring a plinth, a moulded base, and a slightly tapered shaft with sunken inscription panels. The memorial is topped by a segmental cornice and cap, which supports a draped vase adorned with gadroons and cable moulding. One of the inscription panels includes a laurel wreath and ribbon in relief above an incised inscription dedicated to Edward Hancock, who died in 1863.
