Description
The lock-up at Monkton Combe is a late 18th century structure made of Bath stone. It features Bath stone walls and a roof, with a timber door and a metal grille.
The building has a square plan and is small in size. Its exterior showcases a square plan ashlar Bath stone lock-up topped with a domical stone roof and a string course. On the north-western side, there is a narrow square-headed door opening that contains an iron-studded plank door, which is fitted with long strap hinges that have large lozenge-shaped ends. The door also includes a barred peep hole. Adjacent to the doorway is a vertical iron bar and a small metal plaque. The south-western elevation features two irregular sets of ventilation holes located just below the string course. The south-eastern and north-eastern elevations have a stone plinth to accommodate the changing ground levels, while the south-eastern elevation has several modern metal hooks embedded into the mortar joints.
Inside, the lock-up is divided into two rectangular windowless cells by a stone partition that includes an internal doorway with a recess for a cell door that has been removed. The floor is made of flagstone, and the space is open to the internal face of the domical roof.
