Description
16 and 17 Green Street are a pair of terrace houses that have been converted into shops with accommodation above. They were built in the mid-18th century and were raised in height in the early 19th century, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar, which is now painted, and feature a pantile roof.
The houses are three storeys tall, with each house having paired windows on the first floor. The first-floor windows are late 19th-century two-over-two sashes with dropped sills and a band at the heads. No. 16 has paired sashes on the second floor, while No. 17 has a single half-recessed sash in its original opening on this floor. No. 16 has a late 20th-century shopfront, while No. 17 features a late 19th-century shopfront divided by panelled pilasters with double console heads. The roof is plain, and a tall rubble stack on the left indicates that No. 15 was heightened before No. 16. The lobby of No. 17 has mosaic paving with the lettering "MARIGOLD."
The interiors have not been inspected. Green Street was laid out in 1716, and the lower floors of these houses may have been built shortly after that. They, along with No. 18, may be the three "newly built" houses leased to W. Dallamore as recorded in the Council Minutes of 3rd April 1769.
