Description
No. 18 Green Street is a terrace house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. It dates from the mid-18th century and was raised in height in the early 19th century, with late 19th-century additions. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a pantile roof.
The house has a double depth plan with a later extension at the rear that is lit from above. The exterior is three storeys high. The ground floor has a late 19th-century shopfront with panelled pilasters, a fascia supported by console brackets, a window with narrow verticals, and a panelled stallriser. The first floor features paired windows, although only the top sash is visible as the lower half has been blanked off by a band across the building. There is a platband at the second floor level and a single eight-over-eight sash window in the upper added storey. The roof is plain, with a rubble stack that does not have pots.
The interior has not been inspected. Green Street was laid out in 1716, and this house may have been built shortly after that time. It, along with Nos. 16 and 17, may be the three "newly built" houses leased to W. Dollamore, as recorded in the Council Minutes of April 3, 1769.
