Description
4, 5 and 6 Green Street are three terrace houses that have been converted into shops. They were built around 1769, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar and have slate roofs. Each house features a narrow, high-pitched double mansard roof and has been positioned forward from the original building line, as seen with the adjacent No.3, suggesting there may be earlier elements within the structure.
The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with each house having two windows. All windows are plain sashes set in plain reveals. Each house also has a broad two-light dormer in the high mansard roof, with the first-floor windows grouped in pairs and deeper than those on the upper floors. No.4 features a late 19th-century display front at the first floor, consisting of six narrow panes framed by pilasters with consoles and a fascia with a cornice, above a plate glass display front with a deep central doorway. No.5 has a late 20th-century shopfront, while No.6 has a similar design with a fascia and cornice, along with a continuous cornice, blocking course, and parapet.
The interiors have not been inspected. Historically, the street was laid out in 1715 on the site of a bowling green, and the original houses likely resembled the existing No.3. This block was rebuilt as houses on the site of a brewhouse owned by the Dallimore family, who were the proprietors of the Saracen's Head in Broad Street.
