Description

This is a pair of symmetrical houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from roughly-layered lias stone, with ashlar stone detailing, rubble to the rear, and asbestos-cement slate roofs.

The houses are three stories high, each with two windows. The windows are sliding sash windows with glazing bars. The upper windows have twelve panes, while the ground floor windows have a single sixteen-pane lower section. The ground floor window of Shirley Villa is set within a wider opening with flush jambs, and a part-glazed door with a hood supported by brackets is located to its left. A two-story porch, with a sash window above a pair of glazed doors under a bracketed hood, is set back to the left of Shirley Cottage.

Architectural features include a mid-level band, moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet all made of ashlar, along with a central chimney stack. The rear of Shirley Cottage is rendered and has sash windows on each floor. A narrow wing with a monopitch roof extends from the rear; it also has sash windows. The west end of this wing has double gables over paired sash windows with splayed surrounds, and single windows on each floor.

Shirley Villa has a rubble rear wall with dressed quoins. It features a plain sash window, and a smaller additional opening on the first and second floors. A large, flat-roofed extension is present at ground floor level. The party walls between the two houses are coped, with a central rear stack. An ashlar cornice, blocking course, and parapet run the full width of the rear. The interiors have not been inspected.
