Description

A house, St Winifred's Well Cottage, was built in the mid-18th century, likely after 1776, with alterations in the 20th century. It is joined to Clare Cottage, which dates from the early 19th century, also with 20th-century additions. St Winifred’s Well Cottage is constructed from limestone ashlar on its south front and rubble stone elsewhere, featuring a steep, single-pitched pantile mansard roof with two dormers and a moulded stack to the left gable end. The building is symmetrical with a three-window front, a coped parapet and cornice, and six-pane sash windows. A blind window is located centrally on the first floor, displaying a 20th-century low-relief sculpture of St Winifred. The front door is a six-panel design, set under a shell hood. A rear wing is attached to the main structure but has its own gabled roof. Clare Cottage is built with painted rough ashlar and a pantile roof with moulded stacks to the coped gable ends. It is a double-depth plan with a three-window front, featuring 20th-century windows and a front door. The interior of both houses has not been inspected. St Winifred was a 7th-century Welsh martyr; a well in Flintshire associated with her was attributed with miraculous powers, explaining her connection to this spring and the depiction of her in a sculpted relief on the front of St Winifred's Well Cottage.
