Description
Ivy House is a late 18th-century house, subsequently used as a shop, situated on a narrow corner plot at the junction of Sion Hill and Cavendish Road. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front elevations, with rubble stone to the rear. The roof is not visible. The plan is based around three units.
The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window range to the north facade and a symmetrical two-window range to the west. A tall, coped parapet runs along the top of both facades, with a simple cornice close to the top and a larger dentil cornice with a lintel frieze above the second floor (the frieze is slightly returned to the right on the north facade). Sill bands and painted window reveals are present on the upper floor windows. The north facade also features a low, three-storey porch with a coped parapet, a three/three-pane sash window to the second floor, and a six/nine-pane sash to the first floor. The porch also has a pedimented Tuscan doorcase with engaged columns and a later 19th-century six-panel door with glazing at the top. A shuttered window is located on the ground floor to the left, and blind windows with painted glazing bars are present on the right. A mid-19th century projecting shop window with small panes, canted on brackets with segmental arches to the upper panes, is located on the ground floor to the right. A cornice and fascia extends over a blocked overlight and a half-glazed door to the left of the shop, continuing over the canted bay. The east facade features a full-height segmental bow with two six/six-pane sash windows to the upper floors and plate glass sashes to the ground floor.
The interior has not been inspected.
