Description

Dafford’s Buildings, now Nos. 2-5 Larkhall, is an early 19th-century terrace of houses. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar, with No. 2 being painted, and have Welsh slate roofs. No. 2 is largely hidden behind a high parapet. The original plan was double-depth and double-fronted. Nos. 4 and 5 were originally a single house, and No. 5 retains the original central doorway. The buildings are two storeys and attic in height, with three bays to each house, except for No. 4, which has a single bay, and No. 5, which has two bays. Windows in Nos. 2 and 3 are plate glass plain sashes. No. 4 features a projecting conservatory on the ground floor and a modern window with a top-opening light above. No. 5 has three-pane windows with a central opening light. The original doorways remain, each with a flat hood supported by console brackets, and are now fitted with modern part-glazed doors. A first-floor sill band runs across the facade. No. 3 has iron balconettes on the first floor. The building has a cornice and parapet, with a mansard roof featuring two two-light casement dormers. No. 4 has a half-dormer with plain glazing. The dormer of No. 5 is one and a half storeys high, with top-opening lights. Ashlar stacks are present to the right of each house; No. 4 lacks chimney pots. The rear elevation is not visible. The interiors were not inspected. The group value of these buildings lies in their cohesive design and representation of early 19th-century domestic architecture.
