Description

House. Dated 1790 by the owner, with alterations and an extension added in the late 20th century. The house is stuccoed with limestone dressings, and has an ashlar rear, ashlar ridge stacks, and a hipped slate roof. It is arranged with a double-depth plan and is in a late Georgian style. It has two storeys and a cellar, with a 2:1:2 window arrangement. The front is double-fronted, with quoins, plain window surrounds, and moulded stone gutter brackets flanking the windows and paired at the corners. A tall recessed round archway contains a doorway with a metal fanlight shaped like a bat’s wing, and a six-panel door. The door has reeded lower panels, raised upper panels with corner checks, and six panes of glass on each side. Late 20th-century 8/8-pane sash windows are present throughout, extending to the ground floor on the ground floor. The rear elevation features coped gables on either side of a projecting central section. This section has a first-floor canted bay supported on late 20th-century steel columns and a late 20th-century flat roof. The stacks are prominent, each with four octagonal shafts and moulded tops. A curved, single-storey wall with a ramped parapet is attached to the right-hand return, with a 20th-century extension behind. Inside, a wide entrance stair hall is divided by a three-centre moulded arch, featuring 19th-century tiles. A good open-well staircase has column newels, stick balusters, a mahogany veneered ramped rail, a curtail with a marquetry star to the newel, and a rear panelled screen with a half-glazed door. The front downstairs rooms contain original fireplaces, including one with a marble surround featuring fluted details and swagged urns, and another with a late 19th-century steel surround and basket. Original reeded cornices, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters are also present. There is a stone-lined cellar beneath the front rooms. The house features an advanced design with good interior features, situated on a prominent site and contributing group value with nearby listed houses.
