Description

32 Barton Street is a house in a row that includes a shop, built in the mid-18th century with alterations from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of ashlar, which is painted except for the top storey, and has a slate roof.

The exterior features five storeys and a basement, with two windows that are small four-pane sash windows set in plain reveals. There are cast iron balconettes at the second and third floors. The ground floor has a full-width shop front that was altered in the mid-19th century, consisting of two large panes with very shallow transom vents. The door is set back to the left, and there is a fascia and dentil cornice supported by deep scroll consoles, along with a pavement grille leading to the basement. Above the second floor, there is a small coved cornice that continues with the adjoining No. 28, a sill band at the fourth floor, and a coped parapet.

The rear of the building features a good mansard slate roof with a single dormer above two twelve-pane windows and two blind lights on the top floor, along with a cornice that has a blocking course for the eaves gutter. The frontage likely represents a later addition, including the attic floor, to an earlier structure, as suggested by evidence from No. 28. There is a straight masonry joint to the left that indicates a separate phase of construction. The interior has not been inspected.
