Description

This mid-18th century house with a shop has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century. It is built of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The front elevation has four storeys and three windows. The upper windows are twelve-pane sashes set in splayed surrounds, with a single sash on the splay to the right on the first and second floors. A shop front was added in the mid-19th century, featuring pilasters and a two-panelled door with a transom light. It has twelve-pane sashes on either side of the door, with basement lights and fascia with a cornice. The shop front returns to the splay with a part-glazed door and transom light. A cavetto cornice sits above the second floor, and the building is topped by a coped parapet with two ashlar stacks.

The return to Harington Place features a broad gable with a straight central parapet above a cornice, with windows at differing levels compared to the front. The first and second floors have a blind light and a twelve-pane window with balconettes on the first floor, resting on a plain sill band. The ground floor has a blind light and paired plain sashes, with an inserted square light to the left, plus a pavement grille to the head of a basement light. An added single-storey element on the far right provides access to the Harington Club.

The rear of the building has a slate mansard roof with two four-pane dormers, above a broad, full-height canted bay. This bay contains an eight:twelve:eight pane sash window above an eight:eight:eight pane sash window. The ground floor is not visible from the rear. The frontage appears continuous with number 32 Barton Street, and may be a later addition to earlier fabric, suggested by the changes in window levels on the return elevation. The interior has not been inspected.
