Description
The Canal Bridge adjoining Abbey View Lock is a road bridge built around 1800, designed by engineer John Rennie. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a single elliptical arch that spans approximately 3.5 meters. The bridge is supported by vertical abutments and has flush voussoirs with a triple keystone on each side, topped by a deep string course. The high parapet has heavy weathered coping and follows the slight downhill slope of the road, while the main arch spandrels are laid in horizontal courses. The parapets are swept at the lower end, and there is an opening with stone bollards on the west side that leads to the towpath, with walling extending to a square pier on the right. The upper side of the bridge is located immediately next to Abbey View Lock. The Kennet and Avon Canal, of which this bridge is a part, was fully opened in 1810.
