Description
The Ashurst Wood War Memorial is a sandstone structure located at a prominent junction on the main road in the village. It features a small Celtic cross atop a substantial square pedestal, which has a moulded cap and base, chamfered corners, and sunken panels. The pedestal stands on a splayed plinth and is elevated by two steps.
On the front face of the pedestal, it is inscribed with the words "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ASHURST WOOD WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WARS LEST WE FORGET 1914-1918," along with 31 names on the other faces. The dates "1939-1945" are inscribed on the front of the base, which also displays 22 names on the other sides of the base and plinth.
The memorial is set on an area of random paving, with a curved rubble dwarf wall behind it and a rubble curb and steps with an iron handrail in front. The bollards on the north side of the memorial are not considered part of the designed ensemble and are not included in the listing.
