Description
The Morton War Memorial is made of Rowsley sandstone and features a Latin cross on top of a shaft, which has a Sword of Sacrifice carved in relief on its front face. The cross is set on a tapered stone plinth that displays a bronze plaque listing the names of 21 men from the village who died in the First World War and 12 who died in the Second World War. This plinth rests on a square base, elevated on a stone step above the paved enclosure.
The plaque is inscribed with the words: THE GLORIOUS DEAD/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES). The memorial is situated within a raised, stone-paved, semi-circular enclosure that can be accessed by two steps. The enclosure is bordered by a low stone wall at the back and features iron railings at the front, complete with decorative entrance gates.
