Description
Haywards Heath War Memorial is a Cornish granite monument erected on a low grass mound within a triangular green at the town’s western entrance. The memorial is approximately 3 metres high and takes the form of a large, irregular monolith. A raised stone cross is set into a smooth, polished panel on the West face, below the inscription 1914 – 1919/ IN MEMORIAM, carved in large raised letters. A bronze plaque beneath lists the names of those who fell. A smaller bronze plaque, seemingly added later, is inscribed "ALSO IN MEMORY OF ALL COMRADES WHO HAVE/ SINCE PASSED OVER FROM CAUSES ATTRIBUTABLE/ TO THE GREAT WAR." A bronze plaque on the East face commemorates 1939 – 1945 and lists names.
