Description

This barn, located approximately 50 metres north of Need Farmhouse, has origins dating back to the 16th century and was altered in the mid to late 18th century. It is a timber-framed structure consisting of five bays with an aisle to the south. The exterior is clad in weatherboarding resting on a red brick plinth, and it features a steeply pitched hipped roof covered with old tiles, hipped to the east and half hipped to the west.

The north side has central cart doors and four fixed wooden casements. On the south side, there is a cemented plinth with two wooden casements and two small doors. The east side includes two fixed six-pane casements. The end bay to the west showcases late 16th-century jowled posts, an intermediate post, a mid rail, and curved tension braces. A 19th-century vertical plank partition separates this bay from the rest of the barn. The other four bays contain some 16th-century jowled posts, 18th-century posts with cut profiles, and some posts with almost no jowl.

The roof features angled queen struts with through purlins and lacks a ridge-piece. The wall frame includes a mid rail and diagonal tension braces. A floor was inserted in the fourth bay during the 19th century. The aisle has two diagonal braces supporting each tie beam, and many of the upright posts are reused. The aisle posts rest on brick padstones, and the aisle itself has 19th-century partitions and a softwood wall frame. Reused timbers have been incorporated into the purlins and rafters.
