Description
Langley House, located at No. 27 on the north side of West Street, is an 18th-century building with later additions. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features three flat-roofed dormers. The roof is hipped and tiled, and the structure is made of red brick, highlighted by a brick modillion eaves cornice. The house has four windows, including three sash windows with 19th-century frames that have cornices and consoles, although the glazing bars are missing. There is also a 19th-century three-light canted oriel bay window that projects through both storeys, with a sash window in each light.
The entrance is accessed by four steps and is framed by Doric pilasters, a moulded frieze, and a pediment above. The door is set in panelled reveals and features six flush panels, with the top four cut away and glazed. An extension at the east end of the house is two storeys tall and includes a narrow window bay; above it is a sash window with a frame similar to those on the main facade, and below is a door with a small oval window above.
Langley House is part of a group that includes the Church of St Peter, Nos 21 to 25 (consecutive), The John Edes House, and Nos 27 to 33 (consecutive).
