Description
Nos 53 to 56 on Tower Street are a group of houses dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. They now form a north-south wing of the westernmost part of Morant's stores, which includes Nos 17 and 18 on West Street. Originally, these were four separate cottages, but the internal partitioning walls have been removed, leaving only the façade. The houses feature a red tiled roof and a small brick cornice with dentils. No 55 is constructed with grey headers and red brick dressing, while Nos 53, 54, and 56 are made of red brick, with some brickwork in No 56 being partly renewed.
The three northernmost cottages (Nos 53-55) each have one window on both the ground and first floors. The ground floor windows have segmental arches with rubbed brick voussoirs. The doors are set in reveals and were originally flush panelled, with moulded wooden architraves and flat hoods supported by consoles above. No 56 features a parapet and has two modern windows above. Its doorway is adorned with grooved pilasters and an entablature, topped with a wooden boarded door.
