Description

The Railway Station, built around 1907 for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, serves as a railway terminus. It is constructed of red brick with concrete dressings and features red tile roofs, while the concourse is covered in steel and cast iron. The station includes terminus platforms that are accessed via a passage concourse and the main building.

The main building is a tall single storey structure with a 2 and a half storey corner tower. It has seven bays, with the first bay featuring a two-window tower that projects forward. The doorways are tripartite, consisting of double doors flanked by sidelights and topped with a wood mullion and transom window. There are also three-light wood mullion and transom windows. The building has two gables, each with three-light windows that have semicircular heads above the overall canopy. The roof is hipped over the booking hall, and the tower is adorned with a scalloped parapet and a pyramid roof topped by a clock.

The side elevation includes a single storey range with various openings, leading to the main entrance of the concourse. In addition to the main concourse, there is a square carriage bay with a louvred roof made of steel and iron, and two platforms—one featuring an iron canopy and the other a brick screen wall. The concourse itself is roofed in six bays supported by steel Warren girders, with the main building on one side and iron columns with glazing on the platform side. The refreshment room has a five-light domed bay window, and a K6 telephone box is located beside it. This station is a complete example of a seaside terminus station from the Edwardian period.
