Description
There are six headstones and one footstone located in St Peter's churchyard, dating from the mid- and late-18th century. These are made of ashlar slabs with shaped tops and feature well-carved commemorative inscriptions along with relief carvings at the heads of the stones. From the south, the headstones commemorate: 1) William Harris, who died in 1786, with a carving of a skull and crossbones beneath drapes at the top; 2) Ann, the wife of William Harris, who died in 1766, with a skull at the top; 3) John Harris, who died in 17-6, with a cherub at the top; 4) Dorothy, the wife of John Harris and daughter of Thomas and Sarah Hoade; 5) Thomley Mealman, with a cherub at the top; and 6) Sarah Hoade, who died in 1780, with neo-classical carving at the top. The footstone for Dorothy Harris is positioned to the east of her headstone and has a matching shaped top with the letters "DH." The dated footstone of Sarah Hoade is placed against the churchyard wall. This collection of tombstones represents a fine example of mid- and late-18th century memorial art.
