Description
The Church of St Edward the Confessor is a church built in 1875 by James Harris in the early English Gothic style. It is constructed of flint with stone dressings and has a plain tiled roof. The church features a nave, a south porch, a buttressed apsidal chapel, and a north aisle lady chapel that includes a 20th-century octagonal baptistry on the north side. The exterior has five bays with a corbelled eaves arcade and lancet windows throughout, including three at the west end that are linked by a string course. There is a bell turret at the west end. The south porch is gabled and has a seated statue of Edward the Confessor in a niche above the door, while the south door is planked and fitted with strapwork hinges.
Inside, the church has a three-bay nave arcade supported by round piers with foliage capitals, and the end piers are attached to chamfered responds. The interior includes 19th-century fittings and stained glass designed by Mayer and Co. The baptistry features a drum and stem font, and there is an altar reredos from 1911. Additionally, there are 16th and 17th-century relics displayed in the passage walls leading to the baptistry.
