Description

The Sun is an inn located on Wharf Street in Godalming. It was built in the late 18th century for Henry Tewsley and underwent alterations in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a stuccoed ground floor and features plain tile roofs. It has three storeys and is arranged in a four by two bay layout, with a wing extending to the rear right.

The façade includes a plinth, bands between the floors, and a parapet. On the ground floor, the left corner features a late 19th-century bowed pub window with a plinth, pilasters, panelled aprons to the windows, a plain frieze, and a dentilled cornice. To the right of this window, there is a step up to a door with six flush panels, the top four of which are glazed, set in a doorcase with pilasters and elaborately decorated brackets that support a corniced hood. There are two sash windows to the right, with the left one retaining its upper sash with glazing bars. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars, while the second floor features 6-pane sashes, all having flat brick arches and projecting stone sills. An inn sign is hung between the two left-hand first-floor windows. The flat stone coping on the parapet conceals a hipped roof with two stacks at the rear.

The left return of the building is similar and features a ground-floor cornice. The rear has three hipped gables. The wing is of several builds and includes a tile-hung gable, with a 3-light, small-pane casement window retained on the first floor of the inner return. The right return has a plaque on the wing wall inscribed "W SMEEDS WALL 1848".
