Description
Coral is a house that has been converted into commercial premises, dating from the late 17th century, early to mid-18th century, and late 18th to early 19th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of brick and Bargate rubblestone with brick dressings, topped by plain tile roofs. The building is two storeys high with an attic and features a three-bay elevation facing High Street, along with three rear ranges.
The High Street elevation includes a shop front from around 1970, flanked by late 19th-century brackets and a corniced fascia. The first floor is made of painted 18th-century brick in Flemish bond and has three sash windows with glazing bars, set in flush wood architraves with projecting sills. The mansard roof, hipped at the left end, has a flat-roofed dormer containing an unequally-hung 9-pane sash window.
The left side of the building is constructed of Bargate stone with galleting and red brick dressings. The front range features a first-floor sash window with glazing bars in a flush wood architrave. To the left, there is a two-bay late 17th-century range with a plinth, central and corner pilaster strips, plat bands, and a Dutch gable. This range has two 20th-century three-light windows on each floor, with shouldered relieving arches on the ground floor and header-brick arches on the first floor, although the left window is blocked. In the gable, there is a two-light casement window with a shouldered relieving arch.
Further to the left, there are two additional bays featuring an external stack on the left and a ridge stack at the left end. Another late 18th-century range of brick in English bond with blue headers is located to the left, topped by a hipped roof with a stack in the front hip.
Inside, the ground floor of the rear range has large-scantling chamfered beams with lambs tongue stops. There is also an old window in the left wall, which has an ovolo-moulded surround and diamond-section mullions. The first floor has not been inspected.
