Description
Friars Gate is a cottage dating from the 16th century, with later additions at the rear. It features a timber frame that is underbuilt in whitewashed brick and stone on a rendered plinth, with fishscale tile hanging above. The roof is made of Horsham slabs, with a gablet on the right side and a truncated section on the left, along with an end stack to the right. The cottage has two storeys and includes a moulded brick bracket band across the first floor. On the first floor, there are two diamond pane leaded casements, and a ribbed plank door is located at the left end.
At the rear, there is a later wing that is set at right angles, which has a large ridge stack, a plain tile roof, and a catslide extension to the right. This wing also has two storeys, with diamond leaded windows and board doors featuring strapwork hinges.
Friars Gate is an important part of the group of buildings along the Petworth Road.
