Description
Nos 53 to 56 Downing Street is a group of four adjoining buildings from the 18th century that face west and south, located on a bend in the road. The buildings have an old tiled roof and have been altered over time.
On the first floor, there are four 2-light casement windows with small panes. The ground floor features, from left to right, a modern glazed door set in a semi-circular arched recess, a small Regency-style bow-fronted shop window with small panes, modern shop windows and a door, and small recessed windows. Above these, there are 2-light casements with small panes. There is also a passage entry.
Specifically for No. 56, the first floor has a sash window with some missing glazing bars, while the ground floor showcases a bow-fronted Regency-style shop front with intact glazing bars. The rear of the buildings is irregular, constructed of iron stone and brick, and features leaded casements.
These buildings, along with Nos 44 to 57A on the east side, are recognized as a group for their architectural significance.
