Description
This is a row of almshouses built in 1676, with 19th-century restoration and additions. Nos 76 and 78 are 19th-century reproductions. The building has two storeys and features five windows on one side and two on the other. It is constructed of red brick with some blue headers in English bond, topped with tiled roofs and tall chimneys. The windows are casement style, with 19th-century chamfered brick surrounds and mullions. There are label mouldings above the ground floor windows and doors, which have 4-centred heads. The 19th-century paired porches are supported by wooden columns and have tiled roofs. A restored inscription reads: "THE TOLLE HOUSE. Erected in ye Yeare 1676 for the Habitation of decayed inhabitants of the neighbour borough out of the proffits of the Tolle of the Markett of the said Borough. By the care and oversight of James Gresham Esq."
