House, extended into flanking, converted barn. Mid C16, centre range, mid C18 range to right, remodelled in 1895 by Sir Edwin Lutyens and extended to rear by J. D. Coleridge in c.1908. Internally remodelled in 1914 by F. W. Troup who also altered the original Jekyll garden. Timber framed centre range with white- washed brick cladding to ground floor and whitewashed brick and rendered infill above, plain tiled roofs. Timber framed range to left with red brick infill and sandstone rubble range with brick dressings, ironstone galleting and some weather- boarding to right. Timber frame, brick and some tile hanging to rear. Central rectangular house with projecting wings to enclose forecourt and parallel range extensions to rear. Two storeys with attics to rear on main range. Entrance front:- five framed bays with ridge stack to right of centre. Six leaded case- ment windows to first floor, some with old glass and diagonal mullions. Three larger windows to ground floor under continuous pentice hood over ground floor. Ribbed door to right of centre. Left hand range:- Three bay barn with tall stack and further single storey three bay range to end. Right hand range:- Barn dated 1774. Large casement window to left on ground floor, roof lights to eaves dropping down into first floor to centre. Massive stack to centre with bellcote attached on braces. Rear elevation:- Two storeys on tall base with two leaded casements to first and ground floors, one with brick four centred relieving arch over and herringbone tile infilling. Gabled dormer to left. Central stack. Timber framed gabled bay set back to right. Very picturesque house in a garden originally planted by Gertrude Jekyll.
