Description

Winkworth Farm House is a Grade II listed building located on Heath Road in Hascombe. The house dates from the mid-16th century, with a mid-18th century range to the right. It was remodeled in 1895 by Sir Edwin Lutyens and extended to the rear by J. D. Coleridge around 1908. The interior was further remodeled in 1914 by F. W. Troup, who also altered the original garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll.

The house features a timber-framed center range with whitewashed brick cladding on the ground floor and whitewashed brick and rendered infill above, topped with plain tiled roofs. The left range is timber-framed with red brick infill, while the right range is constructed of sandstone rubble with brick dressings, ironstone galleting, and some weatherboarding. The rear includes timber framing, brick, and some tile hanging.

The central rectangular house has projecting wings that enclose a forecourt and parallel range extensions at the rear. It stands two stories tall with attics at the rear. The entrance front has five framed bays and a ridge stack to the right of center. There are six leaded casement windows on the first floor, some featuring old glass and diagonal mullions. The ground floor has three larger windows beneath a continuous pentice hood. A ribbed door is located to the right of center.

To the left, there is a three-bay barn with a tall stack and an additional single-storey three-bay range at the end. The right-hand range is a barn dated 1774, featuring a large casement window on the ground floor and roof lights that drop down into the first floor. A massive stack is centrally located, with a bellcote attached on braces.

The rear elevation is two stories on a tall base, with two leaded casements on both the first and ground floors; one window has a brick four-centred relieving arch above and herringbone tile infilling. There is a gabled dormer to the left and a central stack, with a timber-framed gabled bay set back to the right. This picturesque house is set in a garden originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
