Description

The kitchen garden walls at Hascombe Court, along with attached glasshouses, were built by J D Coleridge around 1906-1907 as part of the estate's development. The walls form a square enclosure made of Bargate stone, varying in height from approximately 2 feet to 8 feet, topped with triangular tiled coping on the northern side. There are four central entrances, one on each side. The southern entrance, facing the house, features square gatepiers with tiled caps and iron gates adorned with metal coronets and lilies. The western entrance has similar gatepiers and iron gates with scrollwork decoration. The northern entrance is round-headed, with tiled keystones and bands of tiles that mimic quoins. The eastern entrance boasts an elaborate stepped surround with triangular tiled coping and three concentric tiled round-headed arches, the outermost of which has a keystone and displays majolica round-headed plaques; the east side depicts a farmer sowing seeds in furrowed fields, while the west side shows a young man digging, accompanied by iron gates with scrollwork.

Attached to the south side of the northwest wall is a large early 20th-century glasshouse with 16 bays, featuring a brick plinth and wood and glass panels with side and top opening lights. The south side of the northeast wall has later 20th-century stabling, and the north side of the north wall includes two early 20th-century Bargate stone outbuildings that have been altered and extended in the late century for use as stabling. The walls are depicted on the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map from 1912.
